Maha Al-Barqawi, a member of the executive office in charge of health at the National Union of Tunisian Women, stated that one in three women in Tunisia suffers from obesity, while the obesity rate among men reaches 40 percent. In a speech broadcast by the Union on its Facebook page to provide special advice for the month of Ramadan, she emphasized the need to follow a set of health recommendations to ensure a healthy fast. She called for adherence to a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and engaging in physical activity as essential factors for strengthening and recovering the body during the fasting month. Al-Barqawi stressed the importance of consulting a doctor before fasting for those with chronic diseases, noting that the decision to allow them to fast is primarily up to their doctors. She confirmed that doctors can adjust treatment plans for those with chronic diseases, such as diabetes. She also pointed out that one in two people with diabetes in Tunisia is unaware of their condition, highlighting the significant role of hereditary factors in Tunisian families in increasing diabetes rates. The speaker reiterated the importance of maintaining a balanced diet during Ramadan, along with taking medications for those with chronic diseases, warning against dietary habits that associate Ramadan with increased cravings, which could lead to overeating and indigestion. She concluded by encouraging physical activity for 30 minutes daily after iftar throughout Ramadan.
