The direct gross domestic product from the Tunisian tourism industry was estimated at 7.3 billion dinars in 2023, representing a contribution of 4.9% to the total GDP, according to the tourism satellite account for 2023 issued yesterday, Wednesday, by the National Institute of Statistics.

Tourism directly contributes to the Tunisian economy with a value of 7.1 billion dinars, which represents 5% of the total added value achieved by the national economy in 2023.

Regarding domestic tourism spending, which includes domestic tourism and inbound tourism (activities of resident and non-resident visitors within the country), it reached about 14.5 billion dinars.

Non-specific products (especially medical services and shopping) accounted for about 24% of total spending, while accommodation, food and beverages, and air passenger transport accounted for 36%, 14%, and 16% of spending respectively.

For inbound tourism, which represents the activities of non-resident visitors within the country, the National Institute of Statistics indicated that the sector's spending was estimated at 10.4 billion dinars.

Non-specific products (mainly medical services and shopping) accounted for one-fifth (20%) of total expenditures, while accommodation and transport accounted for 39% and 21% of expenditures respectively.

Domestic tourism spending returned to the levels of 2018 and 2019. Inbound tourism expenditures represented 72.3% of total domestic spending in 2023, reflecting the recovery of international tourism towards the Tunisian destination after the global health crisis of 2020.

Inbound tourism demand was estimated at about 2.3 billion dinars.

Consumption distribution by product indicates that non-specific products (services, including medical, and goods, including shopping purchases) represent one-quarter (20%) of total expenditures.

Accommodation accounted for 39% of spending, while food and beverages accounted for 12%, and spending on passenger transport services with national carriers amounted to 21%.

On the other hand, domestic tourism spending was about 4.01 billion dinars. For this type of consumption, non-specific products represented one-third (34%) of total spending, accommodation 26%, and food and beverages 22%.

Finally, the internal demand for tourism in Tunisia was estimated at about 2.48 billion dinars in 2023. Non-specific products represented 34% of spending, accommodation 26%, and spending on food and beverages accounted for 22% of total spending.
