Tunisian Network for Rights and Freedoms Rejects Trial of Defendants in 'Conspiracy' Case

post

The Tunisian Network for Rights and Freedoms, in a statement published today, Sunday, expressed its "absolute rejection" of the trial of the defendants in the "conspiracy against state security" case in "closed" sessions. Instead, it called for an open public session attended by the media, observers, and civil society, with a live broadcast on the national channel to ensure transparency. The network, consisting of parties, organizations, and associations, demanded respect for all guarantees of a fair trial according to international standards, which it said include the right to defense with the presence of defense lawyers, the opportunity for families to follow the sessions, the right to confrontation, and transparency of judicial procedures within the session, which will start the day after tomorrow, Tuesday. On the other hand, the network considered the decision to hold the trial remotely, taken by the presidency of the Tunis Primary Court and communicated to the representative bodies of lawyers, as "a continuation of an arbitrary process that began at the start of the case," according to the statement, which criticized the course of the case from its inception and pointed to "violations" that marred it. The case dates back to February 2023 when several politicians, civil society activists, lawyers, and businessmen were arrested on charges related to "forming an alliance with the aim of conspiring against internal and external state security."
