Chinese Health Official Dispels Concerns About "HMPV" Virus

post

Wang Liping, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Sunday that the incidence rate of the human respiratory virus known as "HMPV" (Human Metapneumovirus), which is similar to the flu, is declining in northern China, amid some international concerns about a potential pandemic.

HMPV, which belongs to the same family as the respiratory syncytial virus, causes flu-like or common cold symptoms, including fever, cough, and nasal congestion. These symptoms usually resolve on their own but can lead to lower respiratory tract infections in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

During a press conference held by the National Health Commission in China, Wang stated that "HMPV is not a new virus and has been circulating among humans for at least several decades."

She added that the increase in cases of the virus in recent years, which was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, is due to improved detection methods.
