France Issues New Arrest Warrant Against Bashar al-Assad

post

Two French investigating judges have issued a new arrest warrant against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to Agence France-Presse, citing a source close to the case. This is the second arrest warrant issued by French judges from the Crimes Against Humanity Division of the Paris Court against Bashar al-Assad. The issuance came after an additional request from the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office, according to the same source. Based on the investigation's findings, the prosecutor's office considers that Bashar al-Assad no longer enjoys personal immunity that could protect him from any prosecution before foreign courts, based on the provisions of international law.

This warrant was issued following investigations that proved Salah Abou Nabour, a 59-year-old Franco-Syrian citizen and former French teacher, was killed on June 7, 2017, as a result of his home being bombed by Syrian army helicopters. The French judiciary considers that Bashar al-Assad ordered and provided the means to carry out this attack in Daraa, southwestern Syria, according to the source close to the case who spoke to Agence France-Presse.

In November 2023, the first arrest warrant was issued against Bashar al-Assad due to sarin gas chemical attacks, which his regime was accused of carrying out on August 5 in Adra and Douma, north of Damascus, injuring about 450 people, and on August 21, 2013, in Eastern Ghouta, also north of Damascus, where more than a thousand people were killed, according to American sources.
