France Suspends Visa Exemption for Holders of Algerian Diplomatic Passports

post

France announced the suspension of the visa exemption agreement for holders of Algerian diplomatic passports, according to French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau in a statement to "France Inter" radio.

Retailleau commented on Algeria's stance via the "X" platform, saying: "I regret that Algeria refuses to comply with international law," and warned of "new measures to be taken within the ministerial committee chaired by the Prime Minister." This was in reference to the recent decision suspending the 2007 agreement that granted Algerian diplomats the privilege of entering France without a visa, and possibly hinted at more escalatory steps.

Far-right MP Marine Le Pen called on the French government to take "immediate action by freezing visa issuance, halting financial aid, and even canceling the 1968 agreements that grant Algerians special privileges for residency and work in France."

Algeria had previously rejected a list submitted by the acting chargé d'affaires of the French Embassy in Algeria, which included the names of Algerian citizens subject to deportation orders.
