Germany Plans to Send Border Management Experts to Rafah Crossing

post

The German government intends to send border management experts to the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, according to government sources confirmed to the German news agency.

To implement this step, Berlin plans to amend a 2005 Cabinet decision that only allowed the deployment of unarmed personnel. According to government sources, the amendment will allow the deployment of armed forces due to the current security conditions, which are considered dangerous for unarmed guards.

This deployment could be part of the European Union Border Assistance Mission at the Rafah crossing, which is scheduled to resume operations after years of suspension, as reported by the Al-Arabiya website. This mission was first established in 2005 to help control the crossing, but it suspended its operations in 2007 after Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip, as the European Union refused to cooperate with the movement.

In the first phase, a limited number of European border experts and support staff will be deployed to supervise border inspections, possibly starting from early February. The reopening of the Rafah crossing is part of a three-phase ceasefire agreement between Hamas and the occupying entity, aimed at enabling the arrival of large amounts of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
