The Tunisian Young Doctors Association announced in a statement today, Thursday, that an agreement has been reached to overcome the problem of shortage of intern doctors in training centers at university hospitals in Greater Tunis, Nabeul, and Bizerte governorates.
The association explained that the proposed solutions have led to an increase in the number of intern doctors to more than double the required number, which is estimated at 200 intern doctors, and called on the intern doctors to choose their training centers and join them.
The intern doctors had decided to boycott joining their training centers since November 4th, in protest against the reduction in the number of intern doctors, which had led to a significant increase in workload, reaching 100 hours per week, causing considerable pressure on the doctors present in the hospitals.
The association clarified that the agreement includes recruiting intern doctors who did not pass the medical specialty competition to fill the shortage in the number of doctors required to conduct internships in hospitals in Greater Tunis, Nabeul, and Bizerte.
The association mentioned that the contract duration for the intern doctors would be for a full year, starting work directly on January 15, 2025, adding that the recruitment of these doctors would be under a service provider contract for the state.
The association concluded by noting that it will be overseeing the recruitment of intern doctors and intervening to resolve any issues as necessary, affirming its commitment to the principle of dialogue and consultation away from stubbornness to reform the health sector for the benefit of the people.
