
At least 53 people were killed in a strong earthquake that struck the Tibet region in the Himalayas in southwestern China and was felt by residents in neighboring Nepal on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Several buildings also collapsed, according to official media.
The China News Agency (Xinhua), quoting local authorities, confirmed that more than 62 people were injured, with a non-final toll expected to rise, and several buildings collapsed.
The China Earthquake Networks Center stated that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 shook Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet, and the surrounding area this morning, while the United States Geological Survey reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the Tibet region of China.
The Chinese center explained that the earthquake occurred at 01:05 GMT and was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
