The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, on Tuesday, condemned the unbearable level of suffering endured by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, calling for full respect of the ceasefire and the unobstructed entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting in Geneva dedicated to resolving the Cyprus crisis, Guterres reiterated his call for the "unconditional release of hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip."

Earlier, Guterres expressed his "shock" over the renewed Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, according to a spokesperson for the United Nations.

Meanwhile, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini described the resumption of war as fueling a "hell on earth."

Similarly, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed his shock over the Israeli strikes, calling for an "immediate end to this nightmare."

He stated that "the only way forward is to achieve a political solution in accordance with international law," adding that "Israel's use of more military force will only exacerbate the tragedy faced by the Palestinian people, who are living under catastrophic conditions."

The High Commissioner stressed that "the war must end. We urge all influential parties to do everything in their power to achieve peace and prevent further suffering of civilians."
