post

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck southwestern Japan today, Monday, causing two tsunamis in the region without any reported damage. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 36 kilometers, 18 kilometers off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region, around 21:19 (12:19 UTC), according to the US Geological Survey.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of potential tsunamis up to one meter high and urged residents to stay away from the coast. They posted on the "X" platform, "A tsunami can strike multiple times. Please do not enter the sea and stay away from coastal areas."

Two tsunamis, approximately 20 centimeters high, were observed at two ports in the area, according to the Meteorological Agency. Local media reported no casualties, and live broadcasts from the area on the public station "NHK" showed no visible damage, with the sea appearing calm and maritime and land traffic operating normally.

Japan, located on four tectonic plates in the western "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, is among the world's most seismically active countries. The archipelago, home to about 125 million people, records approximately 1,500 tremors annually, accounting for about 18 percent of the world's earthquakes. While most are mild, the damage they cause varies depending on their location and depth underground.
