Egyptian Foreign Minister Visits Washington

post

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday that Minister Badr Abdel-Aty headed to Washington on an official visit. This follows US President Donald Trump's proposal to relocate Gaza residents to Arab countries, including Egypt and Jordan, and Cairo's confirmation of its rejection of any actions to displace the Palestinian people from their land. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that the visit comes "within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations and strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States and consulting on regional developments," without referring to Trump's plan. The statement also mentioned that Minister Abdel-Aty would meet during the visit with several senior officials in the new US administration and members of Congress. President Trump stated that he had asked King Abdullah II of Jordan to have his country receive some Gaza residents. He was also quoted as saying that he would like Egypt to receive some people from Gaza, adding that he would speak to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi about this. Earlier today, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Cairo would host an emergency Arab summit on February 27 to discuss the serious developments regarding the Palestinian issue. Egypt also said on Friday that it was intensifying its contacts with Arab countries, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, to confirm the region's rejection of the displacement of Palestinians, following Trump's statement that they should leave Gaza. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that Minister Badr Abdel-Aty is in contact with his counterparts from 11 countries, reaffirming "the steadfast Arab position on the Palestinian issue, rejecting the displacement of Palestinians from their land or encouraging their relocation to other countries." Trump's plan for the US to take control of Gaza and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East" after relocating Palestinians to other countries, including Egypt and Jordan, has been widely condemned both Arab and internationally.
